The Lions (Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety) began in 1917 in Illinois. It started out with business men wanting to give something back to their communities. The largest service organization in the world, the Lions currently have over 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries working to end blindness, assisting with clean-up of national disasters, recycling glasses, giving hearing tests, and providing many other needed services.
The Galena Lions Club was chartered on September 14, 1936. It was an all male club until 2006.
This chapter has provided support and service through the years with annual hearing and vision screenings, eyeglasses for area residents, a playground for children, and many other community projects.
The Galena Lions Club seeks projects within the community where they can be of service. In the last few years, the club has donated time and money to the following projects:
- Eye surgery for a local man
- Computer monitor for the Galena Public Library
- Three defibrillator brackets for the Galena-Stauss Senior Care Community
- T-Connection for the Galena Primary School
- Three $500 scholarships to students studying Speech-Language Pathology
- $3000 to United Churches of Galena Food Pantry, twice
- Paid for eyeglasses for four Galena residents
- Gave $1001 to Relief for Haiti
Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month, at 6:30 pm, September through May.
In December, February, and May, spouses are invited to attend. Meetings are generally held at
the Log Cabin, 201 N. Main Street, Galena, 815-777-0393. The kick-off steak fry in September is
held at the Lions Pavilion by the soccer fields. For more information, call 815-331-0180 and leave a message.
